Hose Barb vs King Nipple: What’s the Difference?

A hose barb and a king nipple are the same idea — a thread at one end, a barbed shank at the other — built for two different duties. Picking the wrong one is the most common reason a joint leaks or blows off.

What is the difference between a hose barb and a king nipple?

A hose barb is the light-duty version: a short shank with a few sharp ridges, usually 1/8″ to 1″, closed with a worm-drive clamp onto flexible tubing or light hose. A king nipple is the heavy industrial version: a thick wall and a long, shallow-serrated shank, 1/2″ to 12″, closed with a band clamp or a bolt clamp onto reinforced rubber hose. Same geometry, different scale and different clamping force.

Which one do I need — hose barb or king nipple?

The hose decides, not the fitting. Work from the hose you already have:

Why does the same fitting have different names in different markets?

Because the trade names grew up separately, and a quotation can go wrong on the name alone.

If you send a size, a thread and the hose it goes on, the name stops mattering.

Can I use the same hose clamp on both?

Usually not. A worm-drive clamp concentrates its force on a narrow band, which is enough for light hose on a small barb. Reinforced hose on a king nipple shank needs the load spread across a wide band and held against the hose reinforcement, which is what a band clamp or a double bolt clamp is for. See the T-bolt clamp size chart and sizing guide for band widths and tightening torque.

Does Sunze make both?

Yes. Yes. We produce barbed hose fittings in the BHMC (straight) and BHMEL (90° elbow) series as investment castings, in SUS304 and brass, for hose from 3/16″ (4.8 mm) to 2″ (50 mm) with threads from 1/8″ to 2″, cut to PT (JIS B0203 / ISO 7-1) or NPT (ANSI B1.20.1). Separately we make King Nipples and KC Nipples in the FDKP and FDKS series through to 12″ (300 mm), threaded to NPT or BSP SCH120 with serrated shanks, in stainless steel and carbon steel. Production runs under ISO 9001 in our own plant in Taiwan. Production runs under ISO 9001 in our own plant in Taiwan, and we quote OEM dimensions directly.
