How do I read the part number?
A part number is built from five segments. SWTCG30606T-316L is a socket weld threaded coupling, 3000 lb, for 1/4″ pipe, with a 1/4″ PT thread, in SUS316L.
| Segment | Example | Meaning |
|---|---|---|
| 1. Fitting type | SWTCG | From the type table above |
| 2. Pressure | 3 | 2 = 2000 lb, 3 = 3000 lb |
| 3. Pipe outside diameter | 06 | See the size code table below |
| 4. Thread size | 06 | Same code scale as pipe OD |
| 5. Thread form | T | T = PT (JIS B0203 / ISO 7-1), N = NPT (ANSI B1.20.1) |
| 6. Material | -316L | Blank = SUS304, 316L = SUS316L |
Size codes
| Size | 1/4″ | 3/8″ | 1/2″ | 3/4″ | 1″ | 1-1/4″ | 1-1/2″ | 2″ |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Code | 06 | 10 | 15 | 20 | 25 | 32 | 40 | 50 |
Threaded fittings use segments 1, 3, 4, 5 and 6. Socket weld fittings use segments 1, 2, 5 and 6.
Should I choose 2000 lb or 3000 lb?
Choose by the line pressure, with margin. 2000 lb is rated 140 kgf/cm² and 3000 lb is rated 210 kgf/cm². Only elbows and tees are offered in both classes; couplings, caps and unions are 3000 lb, and the socket weld threaded coupling is 2000 lb. If you are unsure, send the design pressure and the medium and we will tell you which class the drawing calls for.
Should I choose SUS304 or SUS316L?
SUS304 covers general industrial piping, compressed air, water and most oils. SUS316L adds molybdenum and a lower carbon content, which helps in chloride-bearing and marine-adjacent service and in lines that will be welded. If the line carries seawater, brine or a chlorine donor, say so when you enquire — chlorides pit austenitic stainless, and the right answer is sometimes neither grade.
Threaded or socket weld?
Threaded fittings are assembled with a wrench and can be taken apart in the field, which suits equipment assembly and instrument lines. Socket weld fittings are welded to the pipe for a permanent, leak-tight joint with no thread sealant, which suits higher duty and anything that must not be disturbed. Three-piece unions are available in both, for a joint you can break without cutting the line.
What is stamped on the fitting?
Material, size, pressure class and heat number, so a fitter can identify the part on site and the heat number traces back to the melt. Inner surfaces are burr-free.
